The 2015 HSI Conference — Nashville Facts and a New Linkedin Group!

The word is out about the 2015 HSI International Conference and we invite you to join the conversation.
We’ve put together a new Networking Group on LinkedIn -- HSI Conference Connections. Hosted by HSI, this group is for health and safety professionals to connect with each other before and after tradeshows and conferences. This is the place to share stories, industry knowledge, start discussions, plan meetings, and more. And, of course, to make you plans for Nashville, April 29 – May 1, 2015, at the Sheraton Music City.
We’re stoked about this whole Nashville thing, and have been spending some time getting better acquainted with our host city. Here are some facts about this vibrant Southern town that you may not be familiar with:
- In the beginning: Nashville was founded on Christmas Eve, 1779.
- How the Opry became the Opry: The Grand Old Opry was originally known as the WSM Barn Dance. In 1925, the National Life & Accident Insurance Company founded the radio program and the station’s call letters came from the company’s slogan, “We Shield Millions!” But the Opry had a predecessor as well: A year earlier, a station in Chicago served up the WLS National Barn Dance, which was sponsored by Sears-Roebuck, the “World’s Largest Store.” Perhaps the next step in its long evolution should be the HSI Barn Dance….
- Famous beverages of Nashville: “Joel Owsley Cheek was the inventor of Maxwell House Coffee, the blend that became so popular it made Nashville the center of the nation’s coffee business in the early 20th century. In 1892, he developed a recipe for a blend of premium beans and convinced the manager of the Maxwell House Hotel to try the coffee and then to serve it exclusively. The coffee was so well received by the hotel’s guests that the owner gave Cheek permission to use the Maxwell House name for the coffee. Allegedly, the phrase ‘good to the last drop’ was coined by President Theodore Roosevelt after he sipped coffee at the hotel.”
- Feeling poorly? Nashville has you covered: “Nashville is widely known as Music City USA, but its diversified health-care industry is actually the region’s largest nongovernmental employer. Nashville has become home to more than 250 health-care companies that account for $62 billion in annual revenue and more than 400,000 jobs globally, according to data from The Nashville Health Care Council, an affiliate of the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce.”
- Nashville Goes to the Very Best Kind of Dogs: “Nashvillian Morris Frank helped introduce the first seeing-eye dog to the U.S. He was a blind student at Vanderbilt University and heard about a woman in Switzerland, Dorothy Eustis, who owned an experimental breeding station for German shepherds. Frank traveled to Europe and returned to the U.S. in 1928 with his new guide dog, Buddy. In 1929, along with the help of others, Frank and Eustis established The Seeing Eye Inc. in Nashville.”
