The Global HSE Readiness Index (GERI) Report 2024

Benchmarking HSE Maturity and Future-Readiness. This report highlights the critical gaps and vulnerabilities preventing HSE programmes from progressing with confidence.
How vulnerable is your organisation? What HSE risks are you overlooking? How does your work in HSE compare to 1,000 others globally?
HSI partnered with Focus Network to develop the Global HSE Readiness Index (GERI) survey and report. More than 1,000 HSE leaders contributed, over 24,000 data points were collected, and 19+ industries across six continents are represented.
The Global HSE Readiness Index (GERI) Report is the largest of its kind, providing insight into how your organisation compares. The GERI Report benchmarks the overall maturity of HSE programmes by assessing ten capability factors for HSE readiness. It also identifies the critical gaps and vulnerabilities that prevent HSE programmes from progressing confidently.
Why should you read the HSI GERI Report? HSE leaders are largely "stuck" in complexity, struggling to adapt quickly to the evolving HSE landscape. Many are lagging behind in terms of technology, HSE capability (maturity), and remain highly vulnerable to risks, despite being "compliant." The GERI Report aims to highlight these challenges and urge HSE leaders to ACT NOW and become "Ready" by addressing three key areas:
- Risk and compliance - Closing the gap between compliance and risk. Many compliance-focused organisations remain vulnerable to significant risks. Reducing risk should be the ultimate goal of HSE programmes.
- Reducing complexity - Simplifying the HSE ecosystem by embracing "single-source simplicity" (one vendor, one platform) to achieve a single source of truth, a single point of control, and universal visibility of risk and performance. Complexity often drives chaos, not progress.
- Slow to adapt - Organisations are struggling to adapt to new work methods (continuous improvement, technological flexibility), emerging technologies (IoT, AI), and the evolving nature of risks, often hampered by outdated and disconnected technology. HSE programmes are falling behind and are not future-ready.
"The HSE readiness index will help HSE leaders understand their current HSE posture, where they need to get to, and how they can get there by offering a practical framework to build greater HSE preparedness for the future of work."
~ Andrew Milroy, Vice President and Head of Research, Focus Network
What is the GERI? The Global HSE Readiness Index (GERI) Report benchmarks the overall HSE programme maturity of organisations by assessing ten HSE capability factors. The study highlights the critical gaps and vulnerabilities holding HSE programmes back from advancing with preparedness.
Why is it unique globally in the HSE sector? Other industry reports tend to focus on isolated survey insights (e.g., "X% of HSE leaders said this"), while the GERI Report creates a single score using all data sets and factors. It is the LARGEST and ONLY global study of its kind in the HSE landscape, offering a strategic framework for HSE leaders to benchmark their programmes’ maturity and key capability areas against the global mean and their industry peers.
The GERI Survey - The global GERI survey was conducted in October 2023, with responses from over 1,000 HSE executives across six continents. Key insights from the survey include:
- 37% of responses from North America, 29% from Australia/New Zealand/Asia Pacific, 26% from the UK.
- Contributions from 19+ industries.
- More than 24,000 data points gathered.
