Montana Limestone Company

          About Our Customer
The Montana Limestone Company (MLC), a leader in limestone mining, operates a quarry located 70 miles south of Billings, Montana. Montana Limestone plays a vital role in the production of plastics, rubber, glass, and clean fuel. It is a subsidiary of the Dakota Coal Company, the largest coal company in the United States.
How can accountability and safety awareness be improved in the mining industry? With increased federal scrutiny, constantly evolving regulations, and the high costs associated with live training for a large workforce, many companies struggle to keep up with the Mine Safety & Health Administration (MSHA) regulatory requirements. Montana Limestone Company lacked the in-house expertise to effectively run a modern safety programme, so they sought external help, never anticipating a solution that would significantly reduce their operational expenses.
Problem
Employee safety has always been a top priority for Montana Limestone, a mining company that produces tons of crushed stone. Leadership had invested in expensive live instruction for its workforce. While the training was high-quality and achieved its purpose, it required shutting down the mine for a full day, as miners had to sit in classrooms. This resulted in substantial financial losses due to the halt in productivity.
Solution
By offering online safety training using MSHA courses via HSI's easy-to-use Learning Management System (LMS), custom-built specifically for safety professionals, Montana Limestone discovered a more efficient way to deliver training.
Results
Moving the safety training programme online boosted productivity by nearly 100%. Additionally, Montana Limestone realised an estimated 25% increase in revenue by shifting away from traditional classroom training, reducing downtime and improving overall efficiency.
