Before you work with any chemical, read the Safety Data Sheet—the SDS.

It tells you the hazards, how to protect yourself, and what to do in an emergency.

Taking five minutes to read it could protect years of your life.

The best ways to protect against exposure from dangerous chemicals are to: Eliminate exposure by outsourcing the activity or using mechanical systems to perform the work. Substitute the chemical with a less dangerous or non-toxic alternative. Install protection systems, such as ventilation and detection devices in your facility. Change a work practice or procedure to reduce exposure. Use personal protective equipment like eye protection, respiratory protection, proper clothing, gloves, and foot protection.

Before you start, know where eyewash stations and safety showers are located.

Learn the first-aid steps for each specific chemical—some are water-reactive, meaning flushing with water could make things worse.

Know your facility's emergency procedures and how to report an incident.

If a dangerous chemical is released, avoid breathing gases or vapors and making skin contact. If the chemical is flammable, remove ignition sources. As soon as possible, evacuate the area and report the emergency to your supervisor.
