Cold Weather Safety

Welcome to another HSI Safe in Sixty.

If you're not prepared, getting caught in cold weather can be very dangerous.

When the temperature drops, what you wear and do can make a serious difference. Up to 40% of body heat can be lost when the head is left exposed.

You'll want at least three layers of clothing:

Only that inner layer should be tight. Wear a hat or hood and insulated boots, gloves, and keep a change of dry clothing in case you get wet.

You'll want to take plenty of breaks and do heavier work during warmer parts of the day.

Use the buddy system to watch for signs of cold stress, like confusion or slurred speech. Shield work areas from wind and use heaters when possible.

Eat high-calorie foods with complex carbohydrates, and drink plenty of water. Avoid caffeine and alcohol, too.

Cold weather isn't just unpleasant – it can mean frostbite, hypothermia, -and even death. So keep your guard up when the temperature drops.

Until next time, remember: Your safety is worth the extra minute.
