Fall Arrest Systems

Welcome to another HSI Safe in Sixty.

A fall protection harness could save your life, but only if you wear it right.

Inspect your fall protection harness thoroughly.

Don't use if it has any of the following: exposed impact indicator tags, missing label, deformed metal straps or D-Ring, bent or loose buckle tongues, worn, frayed, or otherwise damaged material.

Remove systems from service immediately if they've been subjected to fall impact and test the integrity of the system before using again.

Slip the harness over your shoulders with the D-ring directly between your shoulder blades.

Pull each leg strap up and fasten the buckles together.

Do not attach fall arrest systems to guardrail systems or hoists.

Rig fall arrest systems to allow movement of the worker only as far as the edge of the walking surface.

Stand up straight and adjust the length of the side-body straps.

Then, fasten the chest strap about mid-chest high and adjust to remove any slack.

Make sure the shoulder straps and leg straps are snug, but still allow full range of motion.

Tuck the loose ends of the straps into the strap retainers.

You should be able to fit your fingers underneath your leg straps.

Until next time, remember: Your safety is worth the extra minute.
