Overhead Electrical Line Safety

Welcome to another HSI Safe in Sixty.

This won't shock you, but power line work is dangerous.

If you're working on an overhead line, ask the utility company to shut down and ground overhead lines. If they can't, have them install insulation over the lines.

Assume that any overhead line is energized unless you've heard otherwise from an authorized source.

If you're not specifically qualified, stay 10 feet away when using any equipment near lines rated at 50,000 volts or more. Even if a line has fallen or brought down, don't touch it.

For equipment, you'll want rubber insulating gloves, hoods, sleeves, and mats.

If you're moving equipment, you need a coworker who's appointed to make sure the equipment stays a safe distance from the power line.
