Confined Spaces: Construction Best Practices
Learning objectives
- Distinguish between general industry and construction confined space standards and contexts.
- Explain the key construction-specific requirements (controlling contractor, competent person, continuous monitoring, attendant in engulfment hazards, permit suspension).
- Integrate lockout/tagout, multi-employer coordination, and hazard elimination methods into a construction confined space plan.
- Designate roles and responsibilities among controlling, host, and entry employers on a construction project.
- Develop an emergency response plan specific to a construction environment.
Course overview
Confined spaces present layered hazards that demand precise identification, structured entry procedures, and disciplined emergency response. This series addresses four critical areas: identifying atmospheric and physical hazards, defining personnel roles and permit requirements, planning and executing rescue procedures, and applying construction-specific standards. Together, these resources strengthen hazard recognition, clarify accountability, and reinforce coordinated response practices that prevent serious injury and loss of life.
