Learning objectives
- Recognize Common Workplace Medical Emergencies. Identify signs and symptoms of medical emergencies and understand when to seek emergency assistance as well as how to communicate essential information to first responders. Understand that your priority is your safety; know heat stress conditions; check for medical alert information (bracelets or info inside hardhats); some medical emergencies may actually be persons under the influence.
- Understand Basic First Aid Principles and Response Actions. Gain awareness of fundamental first aid steps, including stopping bleeding, assisting with burns, and responding to injuries. Learn the importance of infection control, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), to prevent exposure to bloodborne pathogens. Understand implied consent and Good Samaritan law; moving injured only when necessary and in harm's way.
- Know When and How to Activate Emergency Response Procedures. Understand workplace emergency action plans, including how to report incidents and locate first aid kits and Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs). Recognize personal limitations in providing aid and know when to defer to trained personnel or emergency responders.
