Mobile Elevating Work Platforms: Aerial and Scissor Lift Safety

Learning objectives

  • Identify MEWP groups and types, common hazards, and who is responsible for safe use
  • Outline the steps to prepare to operate a MEWP
  • Describe safe MEWP use and how to respond to an incident

Course overview

This lesson will provide you with an awareness of the precautions and work practices required to operate a Mobile Elevating Work Platform (MEWP) safely. The lesson by itself does not authorize the use of MEWP equipment; instructional and practical training specific to each MEWP is required. Note: The lesson addresses two types of safety standards, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards and American National Standards Institute (ANSI) standards. The OSHA standards are enforceable by law. The ANSI standards are voluntary, consensus-based, industry-specific standards. However, when OSHA regulations direct MEWP operators to follow manufacturer specifications that incorporate ANSI standards, the ANSI standards are enforceable by OSHA.
