Learning objectives
- Describe health effects associated with asbestos and respirable crystalline silica exposure
- Recognize common tasks and conditions that can create airborne asbestos fibers or respirable silica dust
- State OSHArs permissible exposure limits (PEL) for asbestos and respirable crystalline silica
- Identify basic exposure prevention steps (avoid disturbance, dust suppression, ventilation, housekeeping methods, and reporting)
- Explain when respiratory protection may be required and why only employer-approved/NIOSH-approved respirators may be used
Course overview
General industry employees may be exposed to asbestos and silica during manufacturing processes, clean up operations, or while repairing equipment. Awareness of the hazards associated with these materials can help prevent serious illness or disease. The Asbestos and Silica Awareness training course describes the health risks associated with both materials. it identifies ways to prevent exposure in the workplace. Asbestos and Silica Awareness is part of the Hazardous Materials Safety training series.
