Documenting Performance: Building Clear and Fair Records
Learning objectives
- Define the purpose of performance documentation and its role in fair and compliant people management.
- Identify key dos and don'ts for fair, consistent documentation across employees.
- Apply behavior-based language to document performance clearly, objectively, and without personal opinion.
- Analyze examples to identify and correct bias, vague language, unsupported claims.
- Explain how documentation is used in real workplace scenarios, such as complaints, investigations, and unemployment claims.
Course overview
Fair records start with a shift from opinion to observation. A note that captures what an employee did, when it happened, and how it affected the work stays truthful and consistent, unlike a label such as “bad attitude” that tells a reader nothing. Records built this way hold up wherever performance comes under review, including complaints, investigations, and unemployment claims.
