350-10 - Generator Protection

350-10 - Generator Protection

Learning objectives

  • Identify common internal faults of generation units
  • Identify reportable systems conditions of PRC-019-2
  • Recall external system conditions on generation units
  • Define the term Composite Protection System
  • Recall applications of Composite Protection Systems
  • Recall the purpose of UFLS programs
  • Recall generator relay settings and loadability
  • Identify common protective relay loadability schemes
  • Recall the conditions of a Remedial Action Scheme

Course overview

Generators are susceptible to a variety of vaults which require different methods of detecting and clearing. Because of the complex nature of generation protection, this course covers six NERC standards. These standards all address fault detection and clearance in frequency, voltage, and composite systems. The six standards are:

  • PRC-001-1.1(ii)
  • PRC-006-03
  • PRC-019-2
  • PRC-024-2
  • PRC-025-2
  • PER-006-1

The Generator Protection training course explains generator protection schemes and NERC standards as they apply to protection methods and requirements. This online course covers:

  • Generator fault characteristics and device coordination
  • Generator system protection
  • Generator backup protection
  • Generator relay settings and loadability
  • Generator protection relay loadability schemes
  • Remedial action scheme simulation

Generator Protection is part of the System Protection training series.
