Personal Protective Equipment: Body Coverings and Full-Body Protection

Learning objectives

  • Describe the purpose of full-body PPE as required under OSHA's Personal Protective Equipment standards (29 CFR 1910 Subpart I).
  • Identify common types of full-body protection (e.g., coveralls, chemical suits, flame-resistant clothing) based on hazards outlined in OSHA 29 CFR 1910.132.
  • Recognize employer and employee responsibilities for PPE selection and use as defined in OSHA 29 CFR 1910.132(d) (Hazard Assessment and Equipment Selection).
  • Apply basic OSHA-aligned best practices for donning, doffing, and inspecting full-body PPE to reduce contamination and injury risks.

Course overview

Full-body personal protective equipment protects workers from hazards that affect large areas of the body, including chemicals, heat, sparks, and physical contact risks. Proper selection, inspection, and use reduce exposure and prevent contaminants from leaving the worksite. Meanwhile, clear responsibilities between employers and employees ensure that PPE remains effective and consistently used.
