OSHA Extends Warehouse Safety National Emphasis Program (NEP) Through 2031
OSHA has renewed and updated its NEP for Warehousing and Distribution Center Operations, extending the initiative from three years to five years, with the program now in effect through July 31, 2031.
The NEP targets industries with injury and illness rates that remain higher than private industry averages and guides OSHA's enforcement efforts in warehouses, distribution centers, mail and parcel processing facilities, and courier operations.
The warehousing and storage industry more than doubled in size from 2015 to 2025 and has continued to experience illness and injury rates greater than the national average for ALL private industries.
Under the program, OSHA inspectors continue to focus on common warehouse hazards, including powered industrial trucks (forklifts), material handling and storage, walking-working surfaces, emergency exits, fire protection, heat exposure, and ergonomic risks. The updated directive signals OSHA's ongoing commitment to improving safety in one of the nation's fastest-growing industries.
For organizations with warehouse operations, now is a good time to review forklift safety, pedestrian traffic controls, material storage practices, heat illness prevention, and ergonomic risk management programs to ensure they are inspection ready.
Learn more on OSHA's Warehousing Industry page or download the NEP instruction.
