OSHA Heat Standard Update
OSHA Heat Standard Update
In July 2024, OSHA released the heat injury and illness prevention regulatory proposal (over 400 pages), an important step in the process of creating a federal regulation for all employers. If you have employees who are exposed to temperatures over 80F for more than 15 minutes in a 60-minute period, this regulation will apply to you.
There are already five states with heat regulations not currently covered by OSHA, with California making headlines recently with the first indoor heat illness regulation, so check your state specific regulations.
Here are some key requirements from the new regulations, and how HSI can help:
- Requirement: Develop and implement a work site heat injury and illness prevention plan (HIIPP) with site-specific information to evaluate and control heat hazards in their workplace.
How HSI can help: Once employers complete their written plan it lives in HSI’s Document Management Module within our EHS System for version control and dissemination.
You can also host the Plan as a training element in the HSI LMS, allowing you to assign and track compliance across all employees. - Requirement: Identify heat hazards in both outdoor and indoor work sites. There is a lot more too this, including inspections indoors and out for potential hazardous heat exposure, tracking heat index forcasts, wet bulb globe temp measurement, and more.
How HSI can help: In the HSI EHS System, utilize Checklists & Inspections, Corrective & Preventative Actions, Hazards, Injuries & Claims, and more. - Requirement: Provide initial and annual refresher training for supervisors, heat safety coordinators, and employees, as well as supplemental training after changes in exposure to heat hazards, policies and procedures, or the occurrence of a heat injury or illness.
How HSI can help: HSI provides thousands of training courses, from physical safety to mental health, including a number of Heat Stress courses for all employees and managers. - Requirement: Have and maintain, for a minimum of six months, written or electronic records of indoor monitoring data.
How HSI can help: HSI's EHS System allows you to log and store monitoring data for any period of time, and provides reports necessary if OSHA inspectors ask for them.
Don’t forget, even without this new regulation, the agency can still cite employers for heat related illness and injury under the General Duty Clause, protecting your workers from heat stress is a best practice.

Courses
Courses
Multilanguage package, or MLP, is when the same course contains multiple languages, allowing the learner to select how to complete training. This approach is an enhanced experience for the learner and a streamlined and more efficient approach for administrators using both the HSI LMS or their own, improving the assignment and tracking of mandatory training topics like sexual harassment, safety topics, hazard communication, and more. With this month’s release, we’ve added over 100 MLPs (mostly workplace health and safety topics) to the more than 1,000 we have across our course library.
