Understanding MSHA Part 48 Underground New Miner
HSI offers part 48 Subpart A New Miner training that covers underground coal, metal, and non-metal mines.
To enter an underground mine site, workers are required to take a 40-hour Part 48 Underground New Miner training and complete an 8-hour refresher training each year. HSI’s online courses meet 32 hours of the 40 hours needed for the Part 48 underground certification. The additional 8 hours of training is required to be taken at the specific mine site according to the operator's training plan.
