Creativity: Evaluating Ideas

Creativity: Evaluating Ideas

Learning objectives

  • Describe the three interrelated mental operations in idea evaluation: appraisal, forecasting, and refinement/selection.
  • Use a multi-criteria evaluation framework (e.g. novel vs useful/feasible trade-off, Konradrs creativity scale or custom criteria) to assess candidate ideas.
  • Forecast possible strengths, weaknesses, risks, and implications of selected ideas (i.e. lwhat could go right / wrong?r).
  • Refine or improve an idea by iteratively adjusting its components (e.g. combining elements, relaxing constraints, polishing features).
  • Decide which ideas to prioritize, prototype, or discard based on evaluation and available constraints (resources, feasibility, time).

Course overview

Many promising ideas fail because they are judged too quickly or evaluated without clear criteria. Learning how to appraise, forecast, and refine ideas helps balance creativity with practicality. When evaluation becomes structured and iterative, ideas are more likely to evolve into workable solutions rather than being discarded too soon.
