Learning objectives

  • Recall your role when an incident or injury occurs
  • Recognize symptoms of and responses to respiratory distress, heart attack, and cardiac arrest
  • Identify appropriate responses to bleeding, puncture wounds, and burns
  • Identify the indicators of and appropriate first aid responses to musculoskeletal injuries, including injuries to the head, neck, and spine
  • Recognize the symptoms of, and appropriate first aid responses to a variety of medical emergencies, such as diabetic emergencies, strokes, fainting, seizures, heat stress and cold stress

Course overview

In this lesson you will learn how to identify the seriousness of an injury or illness, how and when to call emergency medical services, how to determine the most appropriate next steps when assisting victims with minor injuries, and how to provide appropriate care for those with serious injuries while waiting for EMS to arrive.
