Civility in the Workplace

Learning objectives

  • Define workplace civility and distinguish it from general politeness by recognizing the shared responsibility to create a respectful, inclusive culture.
  • Identify the personal and organizational impacts of incivility on morale, trust, and productivity, and explain why civility supports psychological safety.
  • Practice intentional, active civility by applying at least two workplace strategies-such as initiating respectful dialogue, giving constructive feedback with empathy, or acknowledging others' contributions-to replace passive or dismissive behaviors in daily interactions.
  • Apply civil-behavior principles when witnessing or addressing incivility, demonstrating how bystander action and empathy reinforce harassment prevention and inclusive work culture.
