- By the end of this lesson, the learner will be able to:
- Understand the basics of HIPAA, including the Privacy Rule and Security Rule, and their relevance to emergency responders.
- Identify what constitutes Protected Health Information (PHI) and the importance of safeguarding it during emergency response situations.
- Explain the minimum necessary rule and how to apply it when accessing and disclosing PHI in emergency scenarios.
- Describe the conditions under which emergency responders can share PHI with family members, other individuals involved in patient care, and in situations where there is a threat to health and safety.
Course overview
As an emergency responder, your first priority should be to the safety and well-being of your patients. As you come across protected health information (PHI) in your role, though, be mindful that you're also bound by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). This course will help you understand how this law impacts you and how you can protect your patients, your organization, and yourself.
