Personally Identifiable Information: 01. Introduction to PII

Learning objectives
- Gain an understanding of the basics of personally identifiable information, including the definitions, risks, benefits, and best practices of working with PII.
Course overview
Personally identifiable information, or PII, is data that can identify an individual. This could include someone's birthdate, address, phone number, etc. Think about how many times you've entered this information online for various transactions. All of this data is being collected, analyzed, and processed by businesses and shared with other companies to gain insight into how to better interact with customers. Obviously, it's essential that this personal information is protected by these businesses and kept private and safe from data breaches and cyberattacks. In this course, we'll talk about which data qualifies as PII, discuss the laws surrounding data protection, and go over ways that organizations use and protect this sensitive information.
