Chemical Reporting Made Easy for Con Edison

Con Edison is one of the oldest and largest energy delivery systems, providing energy for over 10 million people in New York city and surrounding areas.
Heather De Matteo has been their chemical subject matter expert for over 14 years and shares how impactful the HSI chemical management system has been for her and the workers at Con Edison.
The chemical management system is used by Con Edison for more than Safety Data Sheet (SDS) management and access. They set up chemical workflows to manage approvals and evaluate chemicals they use, or don’t use. They have complex reporting requirements for New York city, New York State and federal regulations like EPA. By setting up automated reporting through the HSI chemical management system, the work of 60 different individuals has been reduced to one person and is completed via an automatic upload into the regulatory body’s systems.
Results:
- Better use of employee time: Time spent on data gathering and reporting that was distributed across multiple workers and locations, is now streamlined and consolidated.
- Access: All employees use the system to access SDSs and print labels “Labeling is easy, everybody loves it”. Additionally, over 300 employees have CRS access for inventory and reporting, segmented based on role and job function.
- Reporting: The accuracy and efficiency of chemical reporting is vastly improved, automating what used to be countless hours monthly.
- Chemical Safety: Workflows in the HSI system allow Con Edison to more easily accomplish the important organizational goal of using safer chemicals for their employees and the community.
