Most organizations need written occupational safety & health policies on file. Don’t trust just any free safety program templates you find on the internet – they must comply with OSHA guidelines. Individual laws within OSHA’s 1910 General Industry and 1926 Construction regulations require employers to have various programs, policies and standard operating procedures (SOP’s) in writing by subject. For example, the respiratory protection law requires a written program. The law is very specific about what must be covered (medical evaluations, fit testing, how you arrived at which respirator protects the user from the hazards, how to store it, clean it and so on).

The same is true for the occupational noise exposure law. Same for hazard communication which is the law requiring safety data sheets (SDS), among other things. Whereas the control of hazardous energy (lockout/tagout) law requires step-by-step written lockout procedures.
