Bringing the Safety World Together With ISO 45001

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has published a new global standard, ISO 45001, Occupational health and safety management systems – Requirements.

The Switzerland-based organization explains that the new voluntary consensus standard:

“[W]ill help organizations reduce the burden [of occupational injuries and diseases] by providing a framework to improve employee safety, reduce workplace risks and create better, safer working conditions, all over the world.”

According to a February 1, 2018 EHS Today article:

“A significant aspect of ISO 45001 is how it works within an organization to integrate with processes and goals,” [Vic Toy, U.S. technical advisory group chair] said. “Everyone has a role and responsibility in the management system. Safety and health becomes a shared objective, and when done right, the organization greatly benefits from this cohesive way of managing risks.”

EHS Today also reports that a hard copy of the standard will be available to purchase on the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) ISO 45001 web page. ASSE was a key player in the creation of the standard and “has taken initial steps to pursue adoption of ISO 45001 as an American national standard.”

Integrating processes to improve workplace safety is one of the guiding philosophies behind the HSI Encompass EHS management platform. As more companies seek to establish a culture of safety within their facilities, EHS professionals are discovering the power of integration to help ensure that all aspects of their safety programs and systems are serving all employees throughout the organization. From chemical approval workflows and inventory management to comprehensive safety data sheet (SDS) management to OSHA-, DOT- and EPA-compliance safety training, Encompass brings it all together to streamline EHS programs for any size organization.
