Ammonia Safety

Welcome to another HSI Safe in 60.

Ammonia is corrosive to the skin, eyes, and lungs. It's not just irritating – it's dangerous, and in extreme cases, it can cause death.

What we wear can help us avoid ammonia exposure. Use eye and face protection, like safety goggles and a face shield.

Wear chemical protective clothing, like gloves, aprons, and boots.

In some operations, you'll need a chemical protective, fully encapsulating chemical protection suit and self-contained breathing apparatus, or SCBA.

If exposure is over 250 parts per million, wear a NIOSH approved air-purifying respirator with an appropriate cartridge.

If exposure is between 250 and 300 ppm, wear a NIOSH approved SCBA or supplied air respirator.

If you have any questions about your safety around ammonia, don't risk it. Reach out to a supervisor, consult your site's safety plan, and don't resume work until you have the equipment you need.
