Bloodborne Pathogens

Welcome to another HSI Safe in Sixty.

Bloodborne pathogens, or BBPs, are pathogenic microorganisms that are present in human blood and can cause disease in humans.

These pathogens include, but are not limited to, hepatitis B and human immunodeficiency virus, or HIV.

Treat all fluids as infectious. Even if you believe the fluid is disease-free, risk being wrong and treat it as hazardous.

Wear your PPE, every time. When administering first aid, protect yourself first before treating the victim.

This may be hard when a co-worker is hurt, but never risk adding to the number of victims.

Never use your hands to clean up broken glass, even if you're wearing gloves. Use tongs or a dustpan. If you get blood or body fluids on your clothing, carefully turn the garment inside out as you remove it.

Wash all affected body parts to remove potentially infectious contamination.

Get rid of materials that have come in contact with blood and body fluids. Handle all trash as if it contains sharp or infectious items.

Place all potentially infectious materials and contaminated items in labeled, sealed containers. Make sure containers are color-coded or marked with a biohazard label.
