Arc Flash Prevention

Welcome to another HSI Safe in 60.

An arc flash is an electrical explosion. They happen in a flash. Temperatures soar, and energy moves faster than the blink of an eye.

These can happen because of insulation failure, a buildup of dust or corrosion on insulating surfaces, insects and animals snapping leads at connections, and human error, like dropping tools, accidental contact, or improper procedure.

Employees who aren't specifically qualified should never work on live equipment greater than 50 volts. They must stay outside of the arc flash boundary.

Even qualified workers should only do so if de-energizing the equipment or leaving it increases risk of hazards.

Wearing the appropriate personal protective equipment is essential but remember that having appropriate equipment doesn't mean you're qualified to do the job.

If an arc flash does happen, call emergency services immediately and don't move the injured person unless they're in further danger.
