The forklift is a critical piece of machinery. We know what they do. Today, so many workers make their living on these machines.

OSHA estimates that there are about 35 thousand serious forklift injuries each year, and 85 fatalities.

Let’s cover some safety training tips to help prevent forklift accidents.

  1. This is always good advice: wear the right safety gear, like hard hats.
  2. Take a moment to look over the machinery before running it, to make sure everything is working properly and there isn’t any obvious damage.
  3. When lifting, center the load for even distribution and stability.
  4. Never overload. Follow the load capacity of the forklift.
  5. Awareness: avoid hazards like uneven ground, other vehicles, and overhead obstructions.
  6. Never raise or lower the forks unless the forklift is stopped and the brake is set.
  7. Be extra careful when tilting loads. Never tilt forward with forks elevated except when picking up or depositing the load.
  8. Never tilt the load forward while traveling. This reduces the stability of the load.
  9. Operate at a safe speed.

Remember: These tips won’t slow you down. Forklift accidents are dangerous and time-consuming. Working with awareness will help you avoid problems and remain productive.
