The Global EHS Readiness Index (GERI) Report 2024

Benchmarking EHS Maturity and Future-Readiness. Highlights the critical gaps and vulnerabilities holding EHS programs from progressing with confidence.
How vulnerable is your organization? What EHS risks are you missing? How does your work in EHS compare to 1,000 others across the globe?
HSI partnered with Focus Network to develop the Global EHS Readiness Index (GERI) survey and corresponding report. More than 1,000 EHS leaders contributed, 24,000+ data points were gathered, and 19+ industries are represented from six continents.
The Global EHS Readiness Index (GERI) Report is the largest report of its kind and allows you to see how your organization stacks up. The GERI Report benchmarks the overall program maturity of organizations by assessing 10 capability factors for EHS readiness. The study also highlights the critical gaps and vulnerabilities holding EHS programs from progressing with confidence.
Why should you read the HSI GERI Report? EHS leaders are largely "stuck" in "complexity" unable to adapt at speed to the evolving EHS landscape. They are falling behind when it comes to technology, EHS capability (maturity) and are highly exposed to vulnerabilities (risk) despite being "compliant". The GERI report tries to highlight these issues in a compelling way to drive EHS leaders to ACT NOW and become "Ready" by:
- Risk and Compliance - Closing the gap between compliance and risk. Most organizations who are compliance focused are still significantly vulnerable to risk. Reducing risk should be the end goal of EHS programs.
- Reducing Complexity - Simplifying their EHS ecosystem with "Single Source Simplicity" (one vendor, one platform) to achieve a single source of truth, single point of control and universal visibility of risk & performance. Complexity is driving chaos and not progress.
- Slow to adapt - Organizations are not able to adapt to new ways of work (continuous improvement, technology flexibility etc.), emerging technology (IoT, Ai, etc.) and evolving nature of risk with outdated and disconnected technology. EHS programs are falling behind and are not future ready.
The EHS readiness index will help EHS leaders understand their current EHS posture, where they need to get to and how they can get there, by offering a practical framework to build greater EHS preparedness for the future of work.

What is the GERI? The Global EHS Readiness Index (GERI) Report benchmarks the overall EHS program maturity of organizations by assessing ten (10) EHS capability factors for EHS readiness. The study also highlights the critical gaps and vulnerabilities holding EHS programs from moving forward with preparedness.
Why is it unique globally in the EHS sector? Competitor and other industry reports of this nature have focused on siloed insights from surveys (i.e x% of EHS leaders said this) while the GERI is an index with all data sets and factors contributing to a SINGLE SCORE. It is the LARGEST and the ONLY global study in the EHS landscape that has been conducted where there is a strategic framework created for EHS leaders to benchmark their maturity levels of their programs and key capability areas against the global mean and their industry.
The GERI Survey - The global GERI survey was taken in October 2023 with over 1,000+ EHS executives from six continents responding. Some of the key call outs from the survey:
- Global regions: 37% from North America, 29% from Australia/New Zealand/Asia Pacific, 26% from the UK
- 19+ Industries contributed
- 24,000+ data points gathered for and reported on in the GERI report
