How to Use a Fire Extinguisher

Welcome to another HSI Safe in 60.

It's 10:17 AM. The fire alarm blares. Smoke fills the workplace; flames are rising from a trash can. Now what?

If you have any doubts about your ability or safety with a fire, evacuate immediately and let the professionals do their job.

If you're going to try to put a fire out, always identify a safe evacuation path first.

Do not allow the fire, heat, or smoke to come between you and your path.

And never touch the plastic discharge horn on CO2 extinguishers. It gets very cold and may damage skin.

Then, remember to PASS:

1. Pull the pin. This will also break the tamper seal.

2. Aim low, toward the base of the fire.

3. Squeeze the handle.

4. Sweep from side to side at the base of the fire until it appears to be out.

When a fire takes place, you must evacuate. If the fire re-ignites, repeat steps 2 through 4 to try to put it out, but then continue to evacuate the area.
