Emergency Operations and Communication
Course overview
This instructor-led course is designed to equip power system operators with the knowledge and skills to recognize and respond effectively to emergencies in the power system. Using an engaging PowerPoint presentation and interactive discussion.
Topics include:
- Identifying emergencies related to frequency, voltage, geomagnetic disturbances, and loss of the primary control center
- Understanding restoration strategies, conditions, and issues critical to system recovery
- Enhancing human performance and situational awareness, essential elements for effective emergency response in high-pressure scenarios
Participants will use the HSI simulator to assess emergency situations, prioritize actions, and implement proven strategies to mitigate impacts and ensure system stability. This course emphasizes the importance of situational awareness and decision-making to improve outcomes during emergency operations.
By the end of the course, participants will be better prepared to maintain reliability and minimize risks during challenging conditions in the power system. This training is ideal for system operators, engineers, and other power system professionals seeking to strengthen their emergency response capabilities.
Learning objectives:
- Apply NERC Emergency Preparedness and Operations (EOP) Standards
- List events that constitute an emergency
- Identify emergency conditions
- Assess and solve power system disturbances/emergencies in simulation
- Demonstrate correct mitigating actions to maintain system with acceptable range
- Apply proper communication and human performance practices
- Identify possible causes of a System Blackout
- State System Restoration methodologies, strategies and issues likely to be present
- Identify issues likely to be present while restoring the power system
- Recall lesson learned during system Restoration
- Demonstrate how to restore the power system from start to finish using simulation
- Apply proper communication and human performance practices
