Real Power Balancing and Congestion Management
Course overview
This instructor-led training is designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of balancing concepts, frequency management, and congestion control in power system operations. Participants will explore the dynamics of interconnected networks, the role of synchronous generators in frequency support, and effective strategies for maintaining system reliability.
Topics include:
- The effects of frequency deviations on load, generation, and power flow
- Interconnection balancing concepts, requirements, and system operator responsibilities
- Generator operating ranges, automatic protection schemes, and the purpose of underfrequency load shed (UFLS)
- Power flow principles, including paths of least impedance, congestion risks, and mitigating SOL exceedances
- Situational awareness and operation planning for real-time assessments
Participants will engage in simulations to:
- Analyze power system frequency impacts during generator trips
- Manage frequency control in islanded systems
- Identify and mitigate congestion and SOL exceedances
The class also delves into historical blackout events to enhance understanding of reliability challenges, operational planning analysis, and contingency management strategies.
Learning objectives:
- Analyze the effects of frequency deviations on load, generation, and power flow
- Identify Interconnection balancing concepts and requirements
- List system operator responsibilities for supporting Interconnection frequency
- Describe Underfrequency Load Shed purpose and function
- Simulate impacts to power system frequency due to generator trip
- Simulate frequency control on an island
- Define Reliability
- Recall previous Blackout Events
- Describe Operational Planning Analysis and Real-time Assessments
- List ways to identify congestion or SOL exceedances
- Apply Situational Awareness
- Locate, adjust or direct system components to assist in the mitigation of contingencies that result in SOL exceedances.

This class can be combined with others to make full day or multiple day classes.
All HSI CEH classes combine instructor lecture with a variety of simulation scenarios.
All CEH classes are private. Classes must be a minimum of two days. HSI reports all earned CEHs to the NERC SOCCED database.
